Belarus: What Accountability for Torture
International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) and World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) invite all interested persons to a virtual side-event at the margins of the 49th session of HRC dedicated to Belarus, that will take place on 17 March 2022, at 13.30.
The same day, on 17 March 2022, the OHCHR examination of the human rights situation in Belarus will present its report to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) following which the HRC will decide on possible renewal of the mandate. The side-event is organized to discuss the OHCHR findings and the role of civil society and the OHCHR examination in securing accountability for torture and other human rights violations as well as next steps for the international community.
The speakers are:
- Karinna Moskalenko, expert of the OHCHR examination of the human rights situation in Belarus
- Pavel Sapelko, Representative of Human Rights Center ‘Viasna’ and co-lead of the International Accountability Platform for Belarus (IAPB)
- Natalia Hersche, former political prisoner in Belarus
- James Lin, Istanbul Protocol Coordinator, International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT)
The event is moderated by Gerald Staberock, General Secretary, World Organisation against Torture (OMCT) with the introductory remarks by Mr. Darius Staniulis, Ambassador at the Permanent Mission of Lithuania to the UN in Geneva and Mr. Lars Volck Madsen, Deputy Permanent Representative at the Permanent Mission of Denmark to the UN in Geneva.
