For over three years and a half, the security forces in Belarus have been relentlessly carrying out mass repressions. Each week, the number of political prisoners increases, and human rights defenders receive daily updates about detainees' terrible conditions, pressure from the prison administration, and the worsening health of political prisoners in custody. Viasna reports the latest news about political prisoners.

19 people were recognized as political prisoners over the past weeks. At the moment, there are 1,401 people on the list of political prisoners. In addition, human rights activists learned that 17 political prisoners had served their sentences and were released: Anton Koshchanka, Aliaksandr Tsimafeyeu, Maksim Zinevich, Aliaksei Hrytskevich, Dzmitryi Shchurko, Valeryi Bohdan, Andrei Khalupka, Maryna Dubrouskaya, Mikhail Bashkatau, Ihar Sviryd, Mikalai Karobka, Kanstantsin Paliak, Uladzislau Adamushka, Dzmitry Sonchyk, Siarhei Korsak, Anastasiya Butkevich, Dzianis Sasunkevich.

Andrei was repeatedly persecuted for picketing and expressing his civic position during 2020 and 2021: detained, fined, arrested. In February 2022, Andrei was sentenced to two years in a penal colony under Article 342 of the Criminal Code. At the trial, the activist pleaded not guilty and refused to testify. On July 18, 2023, the political prisoner was released after fully serving his sentence.

Last October, he was sentenced to 15 days of arrest for congratulating Ukraine on Independence Day in TikTok. On February 15 of this year, the activist was arrested again for 15 days. But he was not released after serving the term; he was detained as part of a criminal case under Part 1 of Article 369 of the Criminal Code (insulting a representative of the authorities).

They were detained on January 31 for stenciling the Chase coat of arms on mailboxes and placed in custody.

After Latushka's arrest, it was known that he had been beaten. During the trial, which was held in open session, details of the use of physical force against him in the Central Police Department were announced. Anatol's wife was also convicted three weeks after her husband. Alena was sentenced to two and a half years of home confinement.

It became known that on March 22, a trial will be held in Škloŭ to replace the political prisoner's security level with a prison one. The decision will be made by judge Aliaksandr Tarakanau.

It became known that in March Dzmitry was placed in solitary confinement for 10 days.

Last year, the political prisoner was transferred to a punishment cell (PKT) until March. Earlier it was reported that Dzmitry was repeatedly placed in solitary confinement cell (SHIZO), as well as deprived of visits and care packages and threatened to be transferred to a prison security level.

Dzmitry was detained at the end of October 2020. On December 22, 2021, the Minsk Regional Court sentenced Alinevich and Ramanau to 20 years in a colony; Rezanovich to 19 years in a colony; Dubouski to 18 years in a colony. The trial was held behind closed doors from the first session.
