PENALTY COMMITTEE DENIES MARKEVICH TRANSFER TO HOME TOWN
Volha Markevich, wife of the convicted journalist Mikola Markevich, applied to Penalty Committee of the Interior Ministry with request to let her husband serve his sentence in his home town of Hrodna. Her request was not satisfied. The Penalty Committee explains, that her application reached them when Markevich had already been sent to Asipovichy. However, the decision to send Markevich was made on 29 August. Volha's application dates 27 August.
In her application Volha asked to let her husband Mikola Markevich serve his 1,5 forced-labor sentence in Hrodna. She asked to consider the fact that the family has an under-aged daughter and a son, who is a student. Besides, Mikola Markevich is the only provider for the family. Volha Markevich has not worked since 1999 because of health problems. Mikola Markevich suffers from arterial hypertension and needs permanent medical supervision.
