Members of Belarusian PEN-Center Express Their Indignation with “Viasna” Liquidation

In his letter Liavon Barshchewski, Head of Belarusian PEN-center wrote the following:

“On behalf of members of Belarusian PEN-center I express my indignation with liquidation of the official status of “Viasna” by the authorities and my principled condemnation of the approach, according to which human rights organizations can be liquidated for formal reasons. I express my solidarity to all “Viasna” members as well as my strong convincement that thanks to their authority the experienced “Viasna” members will continue their fair mission in every, even the most unfavorable conditions. The International head-quarters of the PEN-center will be familiarized with out negative attitude towards this liquidation. Using the occasion I also inform you that at the congress of delegates in Mexico two projects of resolutions concerning the issue of human rights protection in our country will be considered. We will make efforts to turn attention of the congress delegates to the fact of the court decision about “Viasna”.
