Pressure on Belaaziorsk City Council Member Grows Stronger
Recently Natalla Akaronka has been fired from work. Now police tries to make her guilty of attack on her husband, head of the city organization of Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Narodnaya Hramada).
Two months ago in Belaaziorsk strangers severely beat Yawhen Akaronka and his wife Natalla, member of the City Council. Mr. Akaronka received heavy bodily injuries and got into hospital. The local prosecutor’s office has initiated a criminal case only now.
Simultaneously Belaaziorsk police clarifies the details of the scuffle. As appears from the preliminary conclusions, Natalla Akaronka, who has reported the case to police, is among persons who might be charged with it.
This is not the first trouble for Natalla Akaronka this year. In January the City Councilor was fired from work in a local school. The official reason is her participation in the session of the Council, which was initiated by councilors in opposition. Pro-Lukashenka councilors boycotted the session which took place in November 2003 and just waited till by-election, after which the opposition lost the majority in the city council, reports RFE/RL.
