Italian Embassy in Minsk Is Concerned with Imprisonment of Valery Levanewski and Aliaksandr Vasilyew for Alleged Insult to President
The representation of the European Union in Minsk considers imprionsment of Valery Levanewski and Aliaksandr Vasilyew for insult to president as disproportion between violation and punishment and reminds that the court didn't allow the defendants to summon their witnesses. The representation of the European Union also expresses its doubt concenring observance of the legal procedures of fair trial, which was evaluated as "politically motivated action with the aim to attack liberty of expression and civil rights of Belarusian citizens".
In connection with this and on the behalf of the European Union the Embassy of Italy in Minsk urged Belarusian authorities to take concrete steps for observance of civil rights and democratic liberties of Belarusian people and establishment of really pluralistic climate during the parliamentary election and referendum".
