Alies Bialiatski: “Now the main task of the Belarusian human rights activists now in Geneva is to make sure that yet another Resolution on Belarus is considered and adopted, and the position of special rapporteur is preserved”.
On 30 March a conference “See, Condemn, Protest” within the free alternative tribune was staged: the Human Rights Committee must fulfill its duties. The conference was organized together with the International Federation of Human Rights, Human Rights Watch, International Organization against Tortures, Amnesty International. The conference was attended by the members of the national delegations, members of the UN committees, representatives of non-governmental organizations: a total of 200 people.
During the conference the participants discussed the efficiency of the Human Rights Committee and other UN instruments that allow defending human rights in the world. The speakers were representatives of the International Federation of Human Rights, Amnesty International, and some national human rights groups of China, Iran, Toga, Chile and Belarus.
The representative of Belarus, Chair of the Human Rights Center Viasna Alies Bialiatski reported in detail on the situation with human rights in Belarus, and also underscored the importance of the Resolution on Belarus adopted by the Human Rights Committee last year. He noted that the main task of the Belarusian human rights activists attending the Committee session is to make sure that yet another Resolution on Belarus is considered and adopted, and the position of special rapporteur of the Committee on Belarus is preserved. A.Bialiatski’s speech aroused interest from those present and a great number of questions on the situation with the human rights in Belarus.
