Authorities banned Midsummer Night celebration to Union of Poles
According to Radio Liberty, the Union of Poles continues to be pressurized: Hrodna City Executive Committee did not allow the Union of Poles to celebrate Midsummer Night on 25 June, the event called by Poles "the Festive Night" and celebrated every year in the center of the city on the banks of the River Nioman.
This is the first refusal received by the Union of Poles. Hrodna authorities referred to the ongoing earthwork on the river banks, allowing at the same time another group of Poles to celebrate Midsummer Night. The head of the ideology department of the city executive committee Siarhei Dubaviets refused to disclose to the Radio Liberty reporter the reasons for such actions by the local authorities.
Valiantsin Liavonau, deputy chair of the city executive committee informed the deputy chair of the Union of Poles Yuzaf Pazhetski that the executive committee allowed celebration of Midsummer Night to Kazimer Znaydzinski, the associate of the former chair of the Union of Poles Tadeusz Kruczkowski recognized by the government as earlier.
True, this Polish Midsummer Night will take place on the left bank of the River Nioman rather than on the right bank, the usual site of the celebrations conducted by the Union of Poles. It should also be noted that Kruczkowski and Znaydzinski were expelled from the Union of Poles.
