Underground Belarusian Humanities Lyceum Begins New Curriculum Year

More than two years have passed since the Ministry of Education liquidated Belarusian Humanities Lyceum. The lyceum still acts in underground. Two classes of pupils have finished it for this time. In summer the present pupils learned in Poland. In the end of August they successfully passed the tests and the lyceum administration decided to give them a month of rest. The teachers and parents care to provide the necessary books and equipment to them. However, according to Liavon Barshcheuski, there are certain problems, such as lack of furniture.

Last year the education process was repeatedly interrupted by the police. They came to the flat that was rented by Viktar Savitski for their lessons. They reported to the administrative commission of Minsk Savietski borough executive committee that fined him for usage of dwelling premises for disallowed purposes.

This year the lyceum refused from flat. Instead, pupils receive consultations in teachers’ flats. It concerns especially older pupils who are skilled in independent work. However, it is still necessary to gather the pupils of the first two years together.

Uladzimir Kolas, the lyceum director, said in his interview to RFE/RL:
--We seek the possibility to provide our pupils with equipped classrooms and laboratories. That’s why we continue our contacts with Lithuania, Poland and other countries. It is difficult to get abroad and it will be harder and harder. However, the consolidation of the lyceum pupils, their parents and teachers is inspiring.
