The young people were charged with disorderly conduct because they had allegedly made anti-presidential graffiti in Minsk downtown. Article 339 (part 2) of the Penal Code enables the Belarusian authorities to send the detained people to prison for up to six years. The nationals of the Russian Federation belong to various democratic and student movements of Russia, and came to Belarus on private visits. Ivan Ninienka, one of the detained people, said that their release from the detention center was thanks to the interference of the Russian Consulate.
