Minsk: Riot Police Detain 22 Youth Activists

In the evening of 13 February at the crossing of Frantsysk Skaryna Avenue and Kazlou Street there gathered youth. Soon the riot police arrived and detained them. They took the detainees to Minsk Partyzanski Borough Board of Internal Affairs. They took the fingerprints and shot the detainees with a video camera. The reasons for the detention weren’t explained. Among the detainees there were the members of “Zubr” Iafhen Afnahel, Liubou Kuchynskaia and Pavel Iukhnevich. At 11 p.m. all detainees except for Afnahel were let go. The police composed on him a report for hooliganism.

“Zubr” press secretary Aliaksandr Atroshchankau said:
-- This action of the police is the clear-up on the eve of the 16th, the Solidarity Day. Youth experience the hardest blow - mass arrests, persecution and criminal cases during the last month. The graffiti that appear in different places of Belarus get the authorities on their nerves. Today’s detention is a manifestation of this nervousness.
