Hrodna: Intimidation of Opposition Activists

On the eve of the presidential election Hrodna police started paying visits to the flats of opposition’s activists. In the evening of 8 March two policemen called to the flat of the Hrodna trade-union activist Ivan Roman and asked to open the door for a private talk. Mr Roman answered he had nothing to talk about with them and in the case they had any pretensions they had to act according to the legal proceedings.

According to the chair of Hrodna regional headquarters of Aliaksandr Milinkevich Anatol Khadzko, such cases are getting more and more frequent. The police has also paid a visit to his flat and the flat of the deputy of Hrodna City Deputy Soviet Siarhei Antusevich, the chair of the independent trade union of the industrial merger Azote. In both cases the police came to the flats when the activists were away on duty missions.
