Minsk: Action against Building of Nuclear Power Station
At 5.30-7.30 p.m. in Banhalor Square in Minsk there took place an action of protest against the building of a new nuclear power station in Belarus. According to the information of the press-service of the Assembly of NGOs, about 30 persons took part in it. They urged the authorities to recollect the Chernobyl accident and prevent the repetition of the 1986 year’s events.
The picketers insisted on the usage of recreational energy instead of nuclear and stated that according to the expert assessment the potential of such energy was 30% of the energetic balance of the country and it is much cheaper than nuclear energy.
This year the temporary prohibition for building of nuclear power stations in Belarus expires. Judging by the publications in mass media, the authorities approved the program of building of such nuclear power station. Adherents of ‘peaceful nucleus’ still try to convince the population of the safety of nuclear technologies, necessity and economical expedience of such station. At the same time they say it is time to forget about Chernobyl. However, how can one forget thousands of broken lives, ill and dying people?
That’s why a group of members of public organizations have started an Anti-nuclear Campaign with the aim to prevent the building of the nuclear power station in Belarus.
