Does Supreme Court Lack Competency to Consider Complaint against Rigged Election?

The Supreme Court of Belarus refused to consider a complaint of 5 993 citizens who demanded to reverse the results of the presidential election 2006, according to which Aliaksandr Lukashenka had been allegedly re-elected as the head of state. ˜We have received an answer from the Supreme Court. It contained the refusal to consider the complaint. It is stated in the answer that the complaint against the ruling of the Central Election Commission (CEC) is not within jurisdiction of the Supreme Court,’ said one of the authors of the complaint, the head of the initiative group of the former candidate for presidency in Belarus Aliaksandr Milinkevich, Aliaksandr Bukhvostau.

˜It was said in the complaint that the presidential elections in 2006 were not characterized by the CEC’s adhering to its mandate, but by trampling on basic principles of the CEC work specified by the law: legal character, independence, openness and transparency,’ Bukhvostau said.
