Amnesty International Hasn't Recognized Aliaksandr Kazulin as Prisoner of Conscience Yet

On 5 December the leader of the united democratic forces Aliaksandr Milinkevich initiated nomination of Aliaksandr Kazulin for a prestigious prize of Martin Ennals, the first Secretary General of Amnesty International. The Martin Ennals Award is one of the main prizes in the field of human rights. It is quite strange, but Amnesty International still doesn’t recognize Mr Kazulin a prisoner of conscience.

In his interview to the UCP press-service the human rights activist Aleh Volchak said that members of the liquidated organization Legal Assistance to Population applied to Amnesty International with this initiative yet before the trial over Aliaksandr Kazilin.

‘It was evident for us that all three episodes of the accusation to Kazulin were far-fetched and politically motivated. Later we received an answer in which Amnesty International stated it would watch the trial. After the verdict was issued we received another letter, in which it was stated that two of the episodes on which the former candidate to presidency was found guilty, were politically motivated, whereas in the third episode, in which Aliaksandr Kazulin was accused of smashing a portrait of Lukashenka, the organization saw features of violence from his side,’ said Aleh Volchak.
