More than 40 Belarusian human rights organizations of different levels urged the UN General Assembly to decline the candidacy of Belarus to the UN Human Rights Council.
In the statement of the human rights activists it is stated that numerous human rights violations committed by the Belarusian authorities make the participation of Belarus in the human rights organ of the UN ‘absolutely unacceptable’.
Human Rights Watch called the position of the official Minsk concerning observance of human rights in the country ‘terrible and shameless’.
The UN General Assembly will vote Belarus’ candidacy on 17 May.
