Historical Heritage of Vitsebsk Is Ruined as Well
According to Narodnyia naviny Vitsebsku
The earthworks in Svabody square in Vitsebsk continued. On 12 May, despite the order of the chair of the culture department of Vitsebsk regional executive committee Nina Suletskaya to stop any kind of activity in this location, the foundation pit in the place where St. Michael cathedral had been situated became much wider – now it is 7 meters long, 5 meters wide and 2 meters deep.
According to N.Suletskaya, the construction of communications on the territory of Svabody square for the projected youth leisure center was ordered to ‘Vitsebskvodakanal’ by Vitsebsk city executive committee. However, as long as the earthworks are conducted in the location where the remnants of the 12th century buildings can be discovered, the builders need to have an agreement of the institute of history of the Academy of Sciences, which they don’t have. Nina Suletskaya and other responsible officials have composed a report about this in order to register the facts of violation of the law on protection of historical heritage.
The remnants of the excavated buildings are driven away in unknown direction. By this the builders destroy the artifacts of doubtless archaeological value and inflict irretrievable damage to historical objects.
