Human rights defender demands to prosecute officials responsible for violation of constitutional rights of citizens

Mazyr human rights defender Uladzimer Tseliapun complained to Mazyr district prosecutor’s office about the actions of officials who had violated the constitutional rights of citizens.

A group of Mazyr residents applied to Mazyr administration for permission to hold a meeting of citizens on March 29th. The submitted application met all requirements of the law.

However, the district administration (deputy chairman F. Haliuk) denied the right of the applicants to hold a meeting, and did not propose any other options for exercising their constitutional rights. Meanwhile, the right is guaranteed by Articles 33, 35, and 52 of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus.

The human rights defender believes the officials of Mazyr city administration fail to meet the requirements of Directive # 2, and fail to “secure the rights and freedoms of the citizens of the Republic of Belarus”, which is one of the primary goals of the state.

In his complaint Tseliapun demands from the prosecutor’s office to determine if the decision of Mazyr city administration was legal and to bring the responsible officials to account for violation of the constitutional rights of citizens.
