Zhana Abramava’s complaint against gender discrimination turned down

The procuracy of Leninski district of Brest turned down the complaint of the oppositional activist Zhana Abramava against inadequate conditions at the temporary isolator of Leninski district police department of Brest.

According to the information of a human rights activist Raman Kisliak, in her complaint to the procuracy Abramava pointed at inadequate conditions of incarceration and turned especial attention to the fact that there he had underwent gender discrimination. The matter is that there are only men in the personnel of the isolator. The cells are equipped with video cameras. That’s why the guards could watch Abramava change her dress or using the toilet.

‘Abramava was kept in the isolator on 29 September -1 October 2005 and On 27-30 January 2006’, said Kisliak. According to him, in September 2008 Zhana Abramava received an answer from the administration of Leninski district police department of Brest that the internal regulations of the police department did not provide work of women there.

The procuracy, in its turn, answered that no law violations were found in the temporary isolator. The activist does not agree to such opinion of the procurator and intends to apply to Leninski district court of Brest.

‘It is not the first complaint of women against discrimination in this isolator’, said the human rights activist. ‘The conditions of incarceration here violate the International Convention on Liquidation of all forms of Women’s Discrimination and the UN Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Human rights activists intend to strive for confession and solution of this issue,’ added Raman Kisliak.
