Anton Astapovich accuses procuracy of inaction

Anton Astapovich, chairman of the Belarusian voluntary society for protection of the monuments of history and culture addressed the procurator general with a letter in order to express his indignation at the passiveness of the procuracy in protection of historical and cultural heritage.

The historian again addressed the procurator general Ryhor Vasilevich in connection with numerous violations of the law On protection of historical and cultural heritage of the Republic of Belarus during reconstruction of the historical center of Minsk.

During this year the Belarusian voluntary society for protection of historical and cultural heritage has repeatedly informed the procuracy about violations of the law. ‘The general procuracy promised to again consider the fact of law violations. Three months have passed and there is still no result. Thanks to the passive position of the procuracy the process of violation of the law On protection of historical and cultural heritage of the Republic of Belarus is getting irreversible,’ runs the letter.

According to Anton Astapovich, numerous appeals of the voluntary society are forwarded to Minsk city executive committee and to the Ministry of Culture, though the mentioned violations continue in front of their eyes. That’s why Mr. Astapovich reminds that procuracy must watch the law observance even in such organs of state government as the Ministry of Culture and Minsk city executive committee.

‘An active and principled position of the general procuracy on implementation of the present legislation will help to put the situation of historical and cultural heritage in line with the laws, thus raising the prestige not only supervisory organs and the law machinery, but also of all our state, the Republic of Belarus,’ sums up Anton Astapovich.
