Authoriteis pressurize activists of anti-nuclear campaign

Representatives of the local authorities started paying visits to homes of the organizers of the campaign against construction of the nuclear power station in order to ‘find more about their civil position’.

In particular, a man in civvies came to Astravets dweller Ivan Zhyletski and asked why the latter was against construction of a nuclear power station in Astravets district. Zhyletski says that during is his life he got used to saying what he thought, that’s why he openly expressed his position.

‘They asked why I did not want this nuclear power station. I answered that I was not against the station, as there are such stations all over the world, but I was against its construction in my region. Homel oblast is already polluted with radio-nuclides; let them construct the station there then. Why, finally, should we agree to everything we are proposed? Everyone has own views,’ thinks Mr. Zhyletski.

Bear in mind that the majority of the campaign organizers are pensioners. The authorities are trying to block the activity of those who collect signatures against the nuclear power station.

‘I know that the local authorities have already reported that everybody in the region supports the construction of the nuclear power station, but there are some people who have already collected more than 250 signatures of those who are against it. So, the situation differs from the reports. That’s why they are trying to block our activities,’ said Ivan Kruk, civil activist from Astravets.

Mikola Ulasevich, the head of the initiative group of the campaign ‘Astravets nuclear power station is a crime’, has wrote an article ‘Sign of mischief, or all wishes at your own expense’, in which he enumerated arguments against construction of the nuclear power plant. He took this article to the editorial office of a district state newspaper.

Soon the article was returned to him. The chief editor said that the article could not be published because it contained insults of duty official and other citizens. However, she did not answer, what in this article could be considered as ‘insult of duty officials and other citizens’.
