Political decision on construction of nuclear power station in Astravets has been taken
Moreover, as stated by the Ministry of Energy of Belarus in response to complaints of Belarusian citizens, it not a topic for public discussion.
As stated by europeanbelarus.org, earlier several hundreds of Belarusian filed to the Ministry of Energy letters with the demand to refuse from building an NPP in Astravets because of economical inexpediency and non-objectiveness of the influence of the NPP on the environment. The authors of the address support their opinion with references to ‘Critical remarks on the possible influence of the Belarusian NPP on the environment’, prepared by the Belarusian Green Party, the movement ‘Scientists for nuclear-free Belarus’ the ‘Eco-defense’ group (Russia), the civil association ‘Eco-house’ (Belarus); scientific monographs and official documents.
In its answer the Ministry of Energy argues against it, drawing arguments for the NPP construction, and informs that the decision on its was taken in January 2008 by the Security Soviet of the Republic of Belarus with taking into consideration the economical, ecological and social consequences of this decision. The ‘main argument’ of the Ministry stands at the end of the letter: ‘We turn Your attention that the political decision on construction of the nuclear power plant in the Republic of Belarus has been taken and is not a subject of public discussion’.
