The first sittings of Hrodna oblast and Hrodna city commissions for elections to the local soviets have taken place. The electoral constituencies were created and the administration of the commissions was elected.

Predictably enough, representatives of Belaya Rus (pro-governmental ‘state NGO’) Uladzimir Khliabich, director of the Kastrychnik cinema, was elected chairperson of the Hrodna city election commission; Valer Sauko, head of the Hrodna oblast organization of the trade union of workers of state and other institutions, was elected chairperson of the Hrodna oblast election commission. Deputy Chairpersons and secretaries of both commissions are also representatives of various state organs.

60 constituencies have been established in the Hrodna oblast for elections to the Hrodna oblast soviet of deputies, 71 of them in the city of Hrodna. 30 constituencies have been established for elections to the Hrodna city soviet of deputies, with the number of electors ranging from 6 150 to 8 660.

As Zmitser Slutski, head of the Hrodna city UCP organization, told ucpb.org, 23 persons applied for membership in the commission. Eight out of thirteen members of the commission are representatives of public associations and unions, namely the union of veterans, women, trade union of workers of education and science, BRSM, Belaya Rus, and a representative of the Fair World party.

Answering the question why representatives of governmental bodies are elected to election commissions, but big political parties stand on the sidelines, Hrodna mayor Barys Kaziankou presiding of the sitting, stated that a UCP representative had been included in the Hrodna oblast commission and a Fair World representative had been included in the city commission, which was enough.
