Homel Regional Court refused to consider a claim lodged by the ‘Just World’ Party after its activist Valianstin Yauzrezau was not elected member of Zhlobin regional election commission. The party’s lawyers are currently drafting an appeal to be submitted to the Supreme Court of Belarus.

‘The Regional Court said: since the decision on the case by the district court is under the Electoral Code final, the Regional Court will not consider the claim,’ said Valery Rybchanka, head of the ‘Just World’ Zhlobin office.

‘The recent amendments to the Electoral Code require that at least one third of the election commissions’ members should be representatives of public associations and political parties. The government said the opposition parties would now be able to participate in the commissions. However, the 1/3 was staffed by representatives of pro-government organizations, e.g. ‘Belaya Rus’ and ‘BRSM’. The aim of our appeal is for everyone to see: whether there is any actual opportunities for opposition parties to work on the election commissions. That is why I am currently preparing a claim to the Supreme Court of Belarus,’ said Mr. Rybchanka.
