On 6-8 April the 37th Congress of the International Forum for Human Rights of the FIDH (the International Federation for Human Rights) took place in Yerevan, Armeniya. About 300 delegates came there from different parts of the world, including the Belarusian human rights defenders Ales Bialiatski and Valiantsin Stefanovich.

During the Congress Ales Bialiatski was reelected the vice-President of the FIDH by secret vote.

Mr. Bialiatski is convinced that this is a honorable position that will have a definite positive impact on his future activities:

’Doubtlessly, my election to this position emphasizes the respect of the international human rights community to the selfless work of the Belarusian human rights defenders in unfavorable conditions. It is also demonstration of a great confidence. Thanks to the Federation, the activities of human rights defenders in the former post-Soviet countries became more intense, and we will continue developing such activities in our countries and coordinating them, using the best experience we have. This election will contribute to the development of the human rights movement in Belarus and is a certain guarantee of our activity in the present complex conditions, when we have no registration. I will use my powers to the maximal extent to promote democracy and human rights in Belarus and helping to human rights organizations in other post-Soviet countries with the use of the Federation’s resources.’
