Baranavichy: detention of Anatol Liabedzka and Yaraslau Ramanchuk
On 7 September, the leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Liabedzka and the presidential candidate of UCP Yaraslau Ramanchuk were detained at the central market of Baranavichy.
As said by Mr. Liabedzka to the BelaPAN, he and Ramanchuk came to Baranavichy to meet with entrepreneurs. ‘We were walking at the market, handing out informational materials and theses of the electoral program and talking with the people. In some time, we were approached by some policemen, who said that we were detained and guarded us to the building of the market administration. ‘According to the policemen, an officer from the Criminal Investigation Department came to them and was attentively examining the things the detainees had been handing out at the market,’ said Anatol Liabedzka.
Mr. Liabedzka pointed that it was not the first attempt of the authorities to disrupt Ramanchuk’s meetings with his potential electors. ‘Similar attempts have taken place in Salihorsk and Vialeika lately. It seems that the authorities seriously fear Ramanchuk,’ commented Mr. Liabedzka.
