‘The death penalty and life sentence are exceptional measures of punishment and are used in isolated cases,’ said deputy chair of the Supreme Court Valery Kalinkovich in an interview with the press.
Speaking on the perspectives of a moratorium on the death penalty, Mr. Kalinkovich stressed that the Supreme Court ‘would not assess such perspectives.’
Belarus is the only European country which still enforces death sentences.
On 29 September 2010 the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe suspended its contacts with Belarus due to ‘insufficient progress’ in meeting the CE standards.
