Supreme Court turns down complaint by HR defender
The Supreme Court has dismissed a complaint by human rights activist Uladzimir Malei, who urged the Court to publish personal data of Baranavichy town territorial election commission. Upholding an earlier decision by Brest Regional Court, the Supreme Court referred to lack of necessary legislative provisions for appealing refusals to disclose the data.
Mr. Malei believes that his inability to know the occupation of the election commission members runs counter to the principle of transparency of the election. Besides, it deprives independent observers of any capabilities to supervise the implementation of the Electoral Code, which provides that state officials can constitute no more than one third of an election commission.
