10 December action of human rights defenders in Minsk
On 10 December human rights
defenders and participants of youth movements held an action dedicated to the
Human Rights Day. They handed out several thousand copies of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights to residents of Minsk.
The Universal Declaration consists of 30 articles that provide the definitions
of human rights. After its adoption, human rights became a part of the
international legislation and a global conception. It was the first time when
the rules defining the way the states must treat their citizens were worked
out. Belarus
abstained from signing this document at that time, in 1948.
Human rights defenders congratulated Minskers and explained them the sense of
provisions of the Declaratin and its meaning for the society. They also handed
out colored booklets of the Human Rights
Defenders Against The Death Penalty campaign.
The people treated the action positively. None of its participants were
detained by the police.
