Three more suspects in 'mass riot' case

The Human Rights Center Viasna learned about three new suspects in the mass riot case concerning the events of 19 December.

They are: a civil activist from Barysau Aliaksandr Malchanau, an electioneering agent of Andrei Sannikau Leanid Navitski, an activist of the Speak Truth campaign (headed by presidential candidate Niakliayeu) Pavel Vinahradau.

According to the official ruling, Leanid Navitski is suspected in the organization of mass riot (Article 293, part 1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus). At present Mr. Navitski is abroad.

In the night of 4-5 January KGB officers searched the apartment that was rented by Pavel Vinahradau and his girlfriend. The search was held by an investigator of the Pershamaiski District Police Department of Minsk Aliaksandr Fitser. After the search Pavel was taken for an interrogation, but didn’t return from it. The search lasted till 5 a.m., in precense of the owner and the neighbors.

Aliaksandr Malchanau's apartment was searched in the evening of 6 January. As a result he was guarded to Minsk in handcuffs. Apart from this criminal case, he can also be a suspect in the criminal case upon Article 370 of the Criminal Code (outrage of the state symbols) that was instigated in connection with the removal of the official flag from one of the administrative buildings of Barysau.
