Smaliavichy: detention of trade union activist Mikalai Pakhabau
At about 10
a.m. Mikalai Pakhabau, Chair of the Barysau town
organization of the Belarusian Independent Trade Union of Radio Electronic
Industry, was stopped by the road police near the town of Smaliavichy.
Mikalai was driving to Minsk
by his own car. There were several copies of the Nash Dom newspaper in
it, which he carried for his friends, and about 50 leaflets against the . The
car was stopped by the road policeman Barsukou, who asked him whether he wasn't
carrying a bomb. The policeman saw the newspapers, after which Mr. Pakhabau was
guarded to the Smaliavichy District Police Department.
At 11.30 a.m.
he was still kept at the Smaliavichy DPD. The police examined his car in
presence of witnesses and made him fill a questioning blank. The police didn't
provide any official reasons for examining the car even when after owner asked
them about it.
