Brest: social-democrats aren’t allowed to hold a picket against poverty
The Brest City Executive Committee sent the Chair of
the Brest organization of the Free Trade Union of Belarus, Deputy Chair of the
Brest region organization of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party Hramada Valiantsin Lazarenka a denial to
authorize the picket against poverty he wanted to hold on 17 June.
The action was to have taken place near the Lahuna
market in the Kavaliouka suburb. As
far as the Brest authorities had determined just
one place for all opposition’s actions in Brest
– the unfrequented stadium Locomotive,
the official reason for the denial that the action wouldn’t be held in the
officially determined place.
Meanwhile, earlier the authorities refused to authorize a similar action which local
activists intended to hold on 11 June at the Locomotive stadium. The alleged reason was that a football tournament
would take place at the time of the action.
Mr. Lazarenka believes that dissatisfied people may hold spontaneous protest
actions if the authorities continue giving such answers to the opposition.
