A number of persons arrested during so called “silent protests” in Mahiliou have lodged complaints with Mahiliou regional court, Viasna’s local office reports.

According to human rights defender Barys Bukhel, not all the persons who stood trials were brave enough to appeal the verdicts.

“People are still afraid. Some fear their employment contracts will not be extended, others are afraid of being expelled from universities. However, those who have submitted appeals to the regional court are going to fight for reversal of the illegal verdicts”, says Mr. Bukhel.

20 persons were detained in “silent protests” in Mahiliou on 3 and 6 July. All of them were convicted by Mahiliou Leninski District Court and were sentenced to fines and administrative arrests. Two protesters – Valiantsin Labachou and Aliaksandr Tsaliuk – have lost their jobs.
