Mazyr town executive committee has banned three pickets in support of Belarusian prisoners of conscience scheduled for 22, 23 and 27 August, saying that the only authorized picket venue in the town – Spartak Stadium – will be occupied by a children’s sports event on the dates indicated in the application.
The pickets were expected to draw public attention to the issue of political prisoners in Belarus, including Viasna’s leader Ales Bialiatski, kept in Minsk pre-trial detention center since 4 August.
The bans will be appealed at local prosecutor’s office, regional executive committee and Homel Regional Court, says local human rights defender Uladzimir Tseliapun.
