Homel-based democratic activists Vasil Paliakou and
Anatol Paplauny appealed to the UN Human Rights Committee against violation of
their rights by the Belarusian authorities.
The matter is that on 26 July 2010 they were fined 1,050,000 rubles each for
handing out postcards to congratulate Homel residents with the Freedom Day.
The activists applied to the UN after the going through all national court
instances. “I don’t understand why I must register postcards in line with the
Law On Mass Media if they are not
periodicals”, says V. Paliakou.
The Homel activists ask the Human Rights Committee to admit the fact of
violation of their right to disseminate information as well as the right to a
fair trial by the Belarusian authorities.
