UN reiterates demands to release Ales Bialiatski
On 20 September, the International Federation of Human Rights and the Human Rights House Foundation held a side-event on the criminal prosecution of Viasna leader Ales Bialiatski.
Dimitris N. Iliopoulos, EU Ambassador to the UN Human Rights Council, said that the criminal charges brought against the prominent human rights defender Ales Bialiatski is nothing but political harassment and called upon the Belarusian authorities to promptly release the human rights defender, as well as all others Belarusian prisoners of conscience. His appeal was supported by representatives of EU member-countries: Poland, Hungary, Germany.
Representative of the Amnesty International organization said that Ales Bialiatski is a prisoner of conscience and demanded to put an end to the harassment of Belarusian human rights defenders.
