Procuracy justifies beating of prisoners in Ivatsevichy colony
The Brest region procuracy gave an answer to the informational-educational
institution “Platform”, headed by Andrei Bandarenka. The organization asked to
hold a check-up on the beating of some prisoners in the Ivatsevichy colony,
including Ramiz Mamedau.
According to Mamedau’s mother, in July the prison officers beat her son and
five other prisoners, after which two of them were taken to the prison
hospital.
“Platform” submitted its address to the General Procuracy of Belarus and the
Penalty Execution Department on 28 August 2011. Prosecutor General Ryhor
Vasilevich ordered his deputy Aliaksei Stuk to exercise a personal control over
the check-up.
The procuracy confirmed the fact of beating of Mamedau, Kaplich and
Yarakhnovich in July 2011, but stated that “the use of physical force and
special gear by the prison officers was lawful and justified”.
At present the informational-educational institution “Platform” is preparing
new complaints to the General Procuracy concerning these facts.
