Brest residents struggle for their summer residences
Representatives of five associations of owners of land
plots at the outskirts of Brest
held a general assembly in order to find the ways to preserve their plots and
houses.
They had received these plots of land, which weren't suitable for growing fruit
and vegetables, 40 years ago. For this time they managed to increase the
prolificacy of the soil and receive good harvests. Many of them privatized the
land and built houses where they live not only in summer.
However, according to the new plan of the development of Brest,
32 hectares
of land, where more than 500 summer residences are situated, are to be used for
“industrial purposes” and included into the free economic zone “Brest”, if a foreign
investor is found.
The people gathered to discuss the ways to defend their property. At present
they are collecting signatures under an address to the local authorities, but
are also thinking about going to court.
