Niakliayeu and Palazhanka face imprisonment
Former presidential candidate Uladzimir Niakliyaeu and deputy chairperson of the “Young Front” Anastasiya Palazhanka, given two and one year of suspended sentence respectively, have been issued the last warning.
The bodies responsible for monitoring
offenders serving sentence can apply to court asking to change the suspended
sentence to a real prison sentence because the convicted persons do not want to
“mend their way”, RFE/RL reports.
Hary Pahanyaila, a lawyer of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, explains: “The
court can deliver a decision to send them to prison. This is provided for by
the law. This variant is possible.” If the court chooses this variant, the
convicted will have to serve the whole period of sentence, Hary Pahanyaila
says.
