Judge Tatsiana Tarabuyeva of Babruisk town and district court has fined four local residents BYR 700,000 each for alleged violation of the Mass Events Code requirements.
Artsiom Markhasiou, Alena and Dzmitry Toustsiks, and Maryna Ivanova were detained shortly after they lit candles outside St. Michael’s Church on 30 October, the day of commemoration of forefathers Dziady.
“I think the court ruling is a total absence the rule of law, an arbitrary decision by the authorities. I will surely appeal the judgment in the near future, as I am not going to pay the huge sum for just lighting a candle”, says Mr. Markhasiou.
