On 6 January the Brest Region Court turned down the
appeal of two activists of the steering committee of the Belarusian Christian
Democracy Party, Zmitser Shurkhai and Ales Charkashyn, unlawfully arrested for
five days on charges in using obscene language in public.
The BCD activists had been detained on 15 December. At first their car was
stopped by the road police, allegedly on suspicion in causing an accident in
Minsk. Later the detainees had been taken to the Maskouski District Police
Department of Brest and charged with disorderly conduct. The real reason for
the imprisonment is the wish of the authorities to prevent them from taking
part in the constituent assembly of the BCD, held on 17 December.
