On 8 January guards of the Minsk KGB office detained
an activist of the “European Belarus”, Mikita Kavalenka, and journalist
Aliaksandr Barazenka. The action lasted for about a minute: Kavalenka unfurled
white-red-white flags and portraits of political prisoners, while Barazenka
shot it on video.
On 9 January the detainees were taken to the Tsentralny District Court of
Minsk. Both of them were found guilty under Article 23.34 of the Code of
Administrative Offenses (violation of the rules of holding mass events).
Judge Ivan Maiseichyk sentenced Aliaksandr Barazenka to 11 days of arrest, and
Judge Ivan Khadanovich sentenced Mikita Kavalenka to 15 days of arrest. The
journalist went on a hunger-strike of protest.
