Political prisoner Vaskovich put into penal cell again
Activist of the Belarusian
Christian Democracy Yauhen Vaskovich got ten days in a punishment cell.
He wrote it in a letter to his grandmother Tamara, RFE/RL reports. The letter
was sent on 13 January. The activist does not write why he was punished.
“Yauhen writes he is fine. He has good relations with other prisoners. As for a
possible meeting, he says he doubts if it is possible. He writes he has been
given ten days in a punishment cell. Now he waits to be moved there,” Tamara
says.
The activist asks to send him a calendar, an icon and the catechism of the
Catholic Church. He reads the Bible, the Old Testament. He sends holiday
greetings to his relatives and friends and asks to light a candle on St Patrick
Day.
Yauhen Vaskovich was thrown into a punishment cell in December last time for
disregard to a board of experts, who determine whether the prisoner mend his
way. He smiled as he was listening to their ruling. This was regarded as
disregard and Vaskovich was placed in a punishment cell for 10 days.
Yauhen Vaskovich spent in a punishment cell 30 days in October and November. He
wrote in a letter to his mother on 18 November that he was given a term in a
punishment cell for insulting the authorities on 19 October.
Yauhen Vaskovich, Artsiom Prakapenka and Pavel Syramalotau were sentenced to 7 years in a medium security penal colony for attacking the KGB building in Babruisk in October 2010. The court of Babruisk found them guilty of malicious hooliganism and intended damaging on an especially large scale. The guys threw two Molotov cocktails at the KGB building on the night of 17 October 2010.
