Belarus might establish institution of ombudsmen
MINSK, 25 January (BelTA) – The institution of ombudsmen might be established in Belarus, Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Belarus Piotr Miklashevich told reporters on 25 January, BelTA has learnt.
The institution of human rights commissioner (ombudsman) can be found in several countries of Europe and the CIS. This institution performs functions of a parliamentary or people’s representative. The human rights commissioner deals with human rights offenses and makes sure the rights are restored.
“I support the idea of establishing the institution in our country. This will be an additional guarantee of rights and freedoms of our people,” the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Belarus said.
“We may come back to this issue in the near future and discuss it on the government level. We will pass a law to set up the institution of ombudsmen in our country,” Piotr Miklashevich said.
