Communication concerning torture of Andrei Sannikau filed with UN Special Rapporteur on Torture
A complaint about torture of Belarusian presidential candidate Andrei Sannikau has been submitted to the UN special rapporteur on torture.
According to Aliaksandr Atroshchankau, the
spokesman for the presidential candidate, this is an urgent appeal on the
grounds of suspicion of using torture that demands immediate interference.
The important ground for the appeal was the fact of incommunicado detention
(without giving access to lawyers, doctors and family), which facilitate the
perpetration of torture.
“The advantage of this kind of appeal is that you don’t need to go through all
mechanism inside the country, national courts and law enforcement bodies, which
are interested in hiding facts of torture in our country,” Aliaksandr
Atroshchankau said.
