Alternative service: No law for conscientious objectors
“Persons who claim the right to perform alternative service are not draft evaders, but conscientious objectors who do not want to perform military service with weapons in their hands. They agree to larger service time,” said Yauhen Asiyeuski, coordinator of the campaign “For Alternative Civil Service”, at today’s press-conference in Minsk.
“The Constitution provides for alternative service. The Military Service Code also contains a number of provisions that mention the possibility for alternative service. There are people who wish to perform civil service instead of military one. Still, there is no law that would regulate the procedure for performing the service,” says Yauhen Asiyeuski.
According to representatives of the campaign, 12 persons have applied for performing alternative service during this summer’s conscription.
