Ministry of Internal Affairs ignores trial over “travel banned” Hulak
Trial over a complaint of human rights activist Aleh Hulak was postponed until July 20.
On July 16, the court of the Tsentralny district of Minsk began to hear a complaint over imposing a travel ban on head of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee (BHC) Aleh Hulak.
The human rights defender appeals against the actions by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Radio Svaboda informs.
The trial was postponed until July 20 as representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs failed to appear in court. The ministry says the officers, who were to attend the trial, were on work trips.
On March 13, Hulak was handed in a notice saying he is banned from leaving Belarus since March 5, 2012, because there was a civil suit against him. Hulak was not informed by the suit by courts. He has not received new information about the suit in the last three months.
Hulak filed a complaint at the actions by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Internal Affairs for illegal imposing travel restrictions.
The trial was to be held on April 6, but it was postponed indefinitely. The judge, who was to hear the case, has visiting hours on the day of the trial. During the next three months, the court did not find time to consider human rights activist's complaint, though under the law, cases of this type should be heard within a month.
