Brest: human rights defender holds race of solidarity with Ales Bialiatski
Human rights defender Uladzimir Malei ran along the
busiest streets of the region's capital wearing a T-shirt “Freedom to Ales
Bialiatski!”.
The action was dated to the first anniversary of Bialiatski's imprisonment.
“The authorities don't let us to express solidarity in any other way. They
banned a picket in support of Ales Bialiatski, but they cannot prohibit me to
run. A year since the imprisonment of the head of the Human Rights Center
“Viasna” has turned today. That's why I decided to jog along the central street
to express my solidarity with human rights defenders and other political
prisoners,” commented Mr. Malei.
Earlier the Brest City Executive Committee refused to authorize the picket in
support of political prisoners which the activist intended to hold on 4 August.
The picket ban was appealed at court.
