Slonim deputies oppose environmental protection initiatives
About 1.5 months ago a group of Slonim citizens
addressed the Slonim District Council with the proposal to consider the
question of putting a ban on the entry of private vehicles in the wood along
the Slonim-Baranavichy highway and imposing fines for discharge of garbage in
the Slonim forests.
According to the Belarusian legislation, collective appeals of citizens must be
put on the agenda of the appropriate Council and considered in presence of a
representative of the applicants. However, in his answer of 18 September 2012
the head of the Slonim District Council Siarhei Rahozik refused to do it.
In the beginning of 2012 the head of the Slonim democratic association Ivan
Sheha personally applied to the Slonim District Police Department in connection
with the discharge of a great load of garbage in the forest. The policemen
quickly established the identity of the protractor. However, it is still not
known whether he was punished. Moreover, new heaps of garbage keep appearing there.
Before the aforementioned appeal, members of the Slonim democratic associations
addressed the Slonim District Executive Committee on the same matter, but
didn't receive an adequate reaction either.
