Slutsk activists campaign for barrier-free pedestrian crossings
The
volunteers of the civil campaign “Nash Dom” (“Our House”) have collected more
than three hundred signatures of the residents of Slutsk (Minsk region) to urge
the executive committee and the council of deputies to bring the height of
curbs in compliance with building codes.
As told by the campaign’s activist Tamara Blinova, the appeal to the government
offered to install lowering curbs, which provide comfortable descent (ascent) of
pedestrians with prams, disabled people, and older people in nine crossings of
the town.
In addition, the campaigners demand to improve the existing lowering curbs on
eight crossings.
"High curbs are not only inconvenient for residents, but also contrary to
the standards established by the rules of construction," says Tamara
Blinova.
According to the activist of the campaign "Our House", on October 16
she received a response from a deputy of the House of Representatives Inesa
Kliashchuk and the chairman of the commission on economy, budget, industry and
maintenance of the population of Slutsk District Council of Deputies Aliaksandr
Zhylko.
The MPs report that the problem is not in their jurisdiction. They redirected
the appeal to the housing department of Slutsk.
As yet, there has been no response from the executive committee.
